I’m hosting Thanksgiving at my rental this year. First time ever cooking dinner for my family. My dad and stepmom have even agreed to travel to come see me! I’m floored! Dad hates traveling to “the city.”
Mom likes to decorate with all that cheesy scarecrow, pilgrim, pumpkin, cornucopia nonsense but I wanted elegance. I already have the wooden table (unfortunately…where’s my Eero Saarineen!), the whitehall glasses, and the napkins.
Here’s the list:
Terrain Tablecloth (out of stock but they do have a wrinkley beauty for $98)
World Market Baroque Plates
World Market Napkins
Anthropologie dessert plates
Vintage Indiana Whitehall glasses
Brass candlesticks and dark purple candles can be found just about anywhere I reckon! I was also thinking of stringing up some colorful leaves to drape over the table. Real or these packs of leaves from WM. Just to make it all the wee more fun and festive! I also need to find 2-3 serving dishes at the thrift to coordinate with my stuff and a server. WM has a turkey server if I don’t find anything else. I don’t want to go nuts because it’s not like I’ll be doing this sort of hosting often. Or maybe it is good to buy now to have later????
Anyway, I think this is a solid tablescape.
You know how some people think of houses in terms of the more expensive the better? Nah, the cheaper the better.
I think in terms of how cheap can I get this thing so that the roof isn’t falling in and the mortgage is SO LOW I can pay off all my other debts and then get the heck out of dodge. And of course, resale value. And for all that, I like to look in the ghetto where I currently live (aka transitional neighborhoods. I don’t really live in the ghetto).
Isn’t this a dream! I mean, can you imagine the remodeling fun you’d have! It’s less than $70k. That basement bar makes my heart skip a beat. Think of how many people I could cram in there in vintage attire with cocktails in hand for a Mad Men themed party!
It looks like the house would get lots of natural light (once you repaint and rip up all that ugly carpeting). That fireplace is amazing and those bookshelves! Love love.
Not that anything will come of this dreaming scheming but I did contact the bank to see what kind of loan I could qualify for. I’m kind of really tired for throwing nearly $1,000 of rent away each month. At the same time, I don’t want to be tied down to a house because I hate Birmingham. What are the pros? What are the cons? As it stands now I am pretty much the home owner of my rental. Unless catastrophe strikes…I have to fix all problems. If I were only paying $200 on a mortgage, I’d pay off my student loans and my debts so much faster (SO MUCH) and have money for any house disasters. I have serious thinking to do. I’m not getting any younger!
My bed came! Sleeping on it is like a hotel dream. It has even changed my mattress! It’s gone from lumpy mush to firm wake up with back aches. HA!
- I did not find blue night stands.
- Do I paint these night stands blue??
- I am unsure what bedding I want. This is an old Anthropologie blanket. It will NOT be staying.
- This rug is too small. Since I reconfigured the room to have the bed on the windows, I didn’t like it at the foot of of the bed.
My idea was to mimic this “best on a budget” option of 2 small rugs flanking the bed. I didn’t try the “best over carpet” option. I don’t have carpet and I don’t really like that open bare floor space where my feet would be touching getting in out and out bed.
Of course in the future, a larger rug is in order. My room would be just fine with the first 8×10 option (not large enough to support the 9×12). That is what I was picturing.
Bed and rug / 2 are World Market (similar. My rug is no longer available).
I found these matching stands at a thrift store. I know they’re technically too tall to be night stands but I’m going to work with them a while and see how it goes. I really liked the hardware and wheeliness. I found that lamp at a thrift store too! The lamp shade is off but I’ll deal with that later as well.
I really hate that bed spread. UGH. The hunt is on. I don’t even know what I want. I’ve never been wild about bedding. I also don’t have a feel for what rug I want.
So should I paint these night stands blue?
Here’s the old set up. I moved all this jazz to the guest room so now I can have guests! Woo!
At least it’s getting there……..
